Excerto da entrevista a Howard Rheingold referida no post anterior:
Q: Blogs have given voice to once-marginal, sometimes extreme views. Is there any danger moderate voices might get drowned out?
A: You got a million or 10 million bloggers out there. A bunch of them are nutcases. A lot of them are at the extreme ends. Many of them are totally uninformed. Some of them are going to be decent journalists. Some of them are going to be better than the pros.
I think there's a Darwinian process when you have a large number of people doing it. If 10 million people are publishing their own opinions instead of sitting slack-jawed in front of the tube, that's got to be healthier for the public sphere. The mass media have disempowered people from the process and made them feel disempowered.
Q: What could make blogging more useful to the masses?
A: What's lacking is grounding in good journalism. It's a learned skill that requires some tutelage by people who understand it. I wish that the people in the news business, instead of fearing the bloggers, would help educate them. [...]

Quanto vale uma vida humana? Entre 3 milhões e 6,1 milhões de dólares...
The Human Factor: human life is priceless.
But the government set a price for it four years ago: $6.1 million. That's the figure the Environmental Protection Agency came up with when it was trying to decide how far to go in removing arsenic from drinking water. [...]
The Department of Transportation also puts a price tag on a human life when deciding which road improvements are worth making, although it's the rather more modest one of $3 million. [...]
How, exactly, did the E.P.A. arrive at its figure of $6.1 million?
Economists looked at the salaries paid to workers in riskier jobs like mining. They figured out that such workers received, on average, an additional $61 a year for facing an extra 1-in-100,000 risk of accidental death. Evidently, these workers valued their own lives at 100,000 times $61, or $6.1 million. (In 2002, the E.P.A. revised the price of a life downward, to $3.7 million -- or if you're older than 70, $2.3 million.)

Creating the enemy: How a risk-averse West has inflamed the terrorism it fears.
Could the West's risk-aversion inflame terrorism, and even create it? [...]
New forms of terrorism are certainly emerging. However, the problem today is not that the terrorists have become all-powerful, but that society feels powerless to deal with the threat they pose. The same corrosive process that has given rise to new forms of violence also allows that violence to have a disproportionate impact. Terrorists are not more threatening; rather, the West is more easily terrorised. [...]
The events of 9/11 may have further consolidated the contemporary virtues of precaution and risk-management, but they existed long before September 2001.
Over the past 10 to 15 years, the politics of fear and caution have come to dominate Western societies. [...]
The war on terror transforms the targeting of terrorist movements into an international military campaign, and as some commentators have pointed out, the notion that you can declare 'war on a concept' is nonsense. [...]
The problem for Aznar, Bush, Blair and the rest is that they are attempting to overcome internal problems through an external focus; they are seeking to forge a consensus around fighting terrorism, when there is little consensus on much else in the domestic sphere. Because their starting point is a lack of consensus, in the shape of political crises and uncertainty at home, the war on terror, however loudly it is declared, does little to resolve their problems; in fact, it exacerbates them. The focus on terrorism as the gravest threat facing humanity has the effect of encouraging the terrorists, while at the same time exposing a hole at the heart of the West.
The real problem of terrorism, in terms of both its origins and its impact on contemporary society, begins at home, in the struggle for moral consensus and moral authority. Instead of launching wars in far-off lands, surely what our societies need are debates about what we stand for and why; about the values we hold dear and wish to pass on to future generations; about our vision of the Good Society and how we might achieve it. Such debates might help to move us away from the deep moral uncertainties that can give rise to nihilistic violence, and make us more resilient against those who execute such violence.

Media Coverage of Weapons of Mass Destruction (May 5-26, 1998, October 11-31, 2002, May 1-21, 2003): The study makes three important observations.
* First, it documents that virtually all of the news coverage accepted without serious question the political formulation “weapons of mass destruction” as a single category of threat. The very extensive objective differences in destructive potential among the various agents included in that category were barely noted if at all.
* Second, the paper analyzes the media’s habit of associating mass destruction agents with the phenomenon of terrorism. That is undoubtedly an accurate reflection of common fears, but it is not an accurate representation of established fact. No terrorist organization has yet demonstrated the capacity to perform an act of mass destruction under a strict definition of that term. There is an important difference between common fears, however prudent they might seem, and actionable threat. It is extremely important that those who wield American military power understand the difference. Media coverage did not acknowledge that distinction during the periods examined, and that is an evident defect.
* Third, the paper notes that established operating principles of the American media make it easier for the incumbent President, whoever that might be, to dominate news coverage by setting the terms of public discussion. Journalistic standards that are meant to ensure objectivity and guard against political bias had the effect of insulating the president from informed critical scrutiny. That effect was compounded during the latter periods under review by the media’s inclination to amplify what was considered to be patriotic sentiment. As a result, the American media did not play the role of checking and balancing the exercise of power that the standard theory of democracy requires.
Iraqi exiles fed exaggerated tips to news media: The former Iraqi exile group that gave the Bush administration exaggerated and fabricated intelligence on Iraq also fed much of the same information to newspapers, news agencies and magazines in the United States, Britain and Australia.

In a way, building a blend of what the blogger is and what the news services are would turn out a kind of superblogger.

[O autor ignora duas realidades:
- porque os tribunais não funcionam não é razão para se regular a "vida social em Portugal" à sua margem;

[...]
But last week, as reported in The Observer, a matter that has hitherto been a local difficulty exercising the legal intelligence of a few harmless British publishers became a subject of international concern when the New York Times was accused of 'infringing copyright' by an incensed American publisher of an embargoed title. [...]
In brief, Blair's publisher, New Millennium Press of Beverly Hills, argues that it released his memoir under embargo, i.e. on condition that the book's contents would not be disclosed until after 6 March, presumably so that it could enjoy magazine serialisation.
Faced with this restriction, the New York Times mobilised its vast resources, collective wisdom and journalistic muscle and devised a stunning, but ultimately simple means by which to circumvent the embargo - it ordered a copy from Amazon.

- Companies compete with their brains as well as their brawn.
- Great ideas have three key elements (improved efficiency, greater effectiveness, or innovations in products or processes).
- There are no truly new ideas out there.
- Innovation comes from the front lines, but the top sets the tone.

Boost for Personal Journalism in New Gadget Blog:
Pete Rojas' departure from Gizmodo to his new gadget blog, Engadget is noteworthy on several accounts.
First, it means more news in a timely way for people who care about gadgets. I'll keep an eye on both blogs, among other sites I watch in this genre.
Second, and more important, it represents a maturation of the blog business sphere. Engadget is part of Jason McCabe Calacanis' small but growing line of blogs in which the authors have a more serious financial stake than in Nick Denton's collection. Competing business models almost always lead to better products.
Third, it's another sign that being a well-known blogger is a good career move. Recall that Elizabeth Spiers, the first writer of Gawker, another Denton blog, was hired away by New York magazine. Even if Rojas' new venture doesn't work out, he's now recognized as a serious player in his field.

Letter About Disney Raises Question About Columnist: Of the many sources of friction between Michael D. Eisner and Michael Ovitz during their ill-fated partnership at the Walt Disney Company in the mid-1990's, one previously unknown bone of contention recently surfaced: Mr. Ovitz's attempted manipulation of the news media.
In a seven-page confidential letter written to Mr. Ovitz, then the company's president, Mr. Eisner, the chairman and chief executive, tallies his professional and personal complaints with Mr. Ovitz, and takes particular issue with one journalistic interaction.
Mr. Eisner in the letter in November 1996, quotes Mr. Ovitz as saying that Peter Bart, the editor in chief of Variety as well as one of its columnists, had sent him an article prior to publication for "corrections and tone and editing.''

Extra! Extra! Read All About You: Rob Runett, director of electronic communications for the Newspaper Association of America, says small and medium-sized papers are also following in the footsteps of the major dailies. To get access to articles, readers are increasingly required to provide such data as age, ZIP code, gender and, in many cases, information about income and personal interests.
The motive is a basic one. Newspapers want to make money from their websites. And since most readers are unwilling to pay for content in a world where online news is widely available for free, making money requires selling advertising.
To convince advertisers to spend online, newspapers say they need to get enough data about their users to tailor ads to the most receptive possible audience. Thus, it's necessary to have enough data about its audience to determine, say, how people live within driving distance of a particular store, or which readers would be most interested in offers from luxury-car dealers.

Strange concept: this car dobs you in to the speed camera: Disputing a speed-camera fine could soon be a thing of the past. Today, Toyota will unveil a car that takes away the guesswork when it comes to identifying the leadfoot in the family. [...]
Wireless technology would allow the car to communicate with the speed camera, and the fine could be deducted from the driver's credit card before he or she even made it home. But would anyone buy such a car?
