Scientists unveil the next step in the human genome project: The venture, dubbed the international "HapMap" project, because it will map groups of genes known as haplotypes, is expected to take three years and involves public and private research centres in six countries. Its goal is to help scientists uncover the origins of complex diseases that have many genetic components, such as cancer, diabetes, and schizophrenia.
