Political journalists find gold mine in Internet: Following the lead from that seminal work, [Al] May, now a 23-year veteran of the newspaper trade, published this month “The Virtual Trail: Political Journalism on the Internet”, a detailed report on how the Internet has impacted the way reporters cover politics. May learned:
•75 percent of the reporters said they spent at least one hour online each day, and more than a third said they spent two hours or more; and
•More than 50 percent of the journalists said they read at least 30 e-mails a day, while 25 percent accommodate more than 50 messages each day. [...]
May, who uses the Internet in his classes, said he’d like to see more reporters trained in Web-based research. “Right now, I think they’re learning it on their own.”
