Neutral Net? Who Are You Kidding?: How neutral is the net right now?
Not very, it turns out. [...]
"I don't think the internet has ever been perfectly equal or neutral," says Khaled Nasr, a partner at venture-capital firm InterWest Partners. "There has always been some level of inequality." Seconds Matt Tooley, CTO of broadband optimization firm CableMatrix: "I don't think it's as egalitarian as people would like to think it is."

- Do Politicians Lead the Tango? A Study of the Relationship between Swedish Journalists and their Political Sources in the Context of Election Campaigns
"This article examines the relationship between journalists and their political sources in Sweden during the National Election in 2002, and in so doing makes a distinction between the power over the process of news making and the media agenda, and the power over the content and the framing of news stories. The results show the importance of making such a distinction. They also show that, in Sweden, it is the journalists and not their political sources that lead the tango most of the time."
- What is good journalism? comparing Israeli public and journalists' perspectives
"In this study, a sample of Israeli journalists and a sample of the Israeli public were asked a series of questions about the core values and practices of journalism. Results suggest four major conclusions: first, Israeli journalists have a clear, relatively uniform perception of what constitutes worthy journalism. Second, journalists and the public differ in the degrees of significance they assign to various journalistic norms and practices. Third, the public is slightly more positive in its overall assessment of the Israeli media in comparison with the journalists. Finally, the two general assessments are constituted by different, or even opposing, components."
- The mission of the j-blog - Recapturing journalistic authority online
"When journalists blog, they engage in postmodern reporting and writing even as they are attempting to reclaim journalism authority online. The j-blog has already begun to evolve traditional notions of the mainstream press. Readers and other non-journalists help craft the story. News format changes. Ultimately, this evolution will affect what we know as the ?truth? about our society and ourselves, what we mean by ?community?, and how we understand reality."
- The `Indymedia' Experiment: The Internet as Movement Facilitator Against Institutional Control
- Facsimile: A forgotten ?new medium? from the 20th century
"Yet, to date, accounts of the history of media technologies have ignored the rise, fall, and transformation of one innovation whose applications in the first half of the 20th century parallel recent developments in WiFi internet, mobile telephony, telework, telemedicine, online publishing, and video-on-demand."

L. Gordon Crovitz Ushers in Journal 3.0: Three months into the reign of L. Gordon Crovitz as publisher of The Wall Street Journal's freshly unified print and Web operations, he and his team are moving quickly to develop the print edition's next iteration, known internally as Journal 3.0.
Their plans are still evolving -- 20 focus groups have been conducted, and another 60 are scheduled to take place once the next Journal prototype arrives in June. But one thing's for sure: Journal 3.0 will take its cues from the Internet. The newspaper has run The Wall Street Journal Online for 10 years, and the new print edition takes into account how the Web version continues to change consumers' expectations.
And that reflects a growing and welcome effort among publishers to mine the particular advantages of Web surfing for application to the printed page.

The Rise of the Aerotropolis: AIRPORTS ARE NO LONGER SIMPLY places where airplanes land and passengers and cargo transit. [...]
Schiphol is but one example of how major airports are beginning to drive business siting and urban development in the 21st century, much as highways did in the 20th, railroads in the 19th, and seaports in the 18th. As aviation-oriented businesses cluster at and near major airports, a new urban entity is emerging: the Aerotropolis. Similar in shape to the traditional metropolis of a central city and its commuter-heavy suburbs, the Aerotropolis consists of an airport city core and an outlying area of businesses stretching fifteen miles along transportation corridors.
At the New JetBlue Terminal, Passengers May Pirouette to Gate 3: Last year his firm was hired to design the "interior experience" (arrival, departure, retail space) of the new JetBlue Airways terminal being built at Kennedy International Airport. And in what may be a first for architectural collaboration, Mr. Rockwell hired a choreographer ? his Broadway colleague Jerry Mitchell ? to help him.
The two men thought a lot about which public spaces in New York were well "choreographed" ? that is, which shaped people's movement successfully ? and which were not.
