Ten Recurring Economic Fallacies, 1774?2004: The question for us is: What have we made of it? No one can justly appreciate the natural resources of this country until, by studying the deleterious effects of bad currency and bad taxation, he has formed some conception of how much, since the first settlers came here, has been wasted and lost."
The unseen again. Let us begin with geography and resources, to which Sumner alludes. The lower 48 states are entirely in the temperate zone. Apart from the desert states of the southwest, all receive ample rainfall. Most of the land is fertile, and it is abundant. The country teems with natural resources.
Then there are the people. Until very recently, the United States enjoyed a low density of population, which meant high wages and low land prices. And for centuries, the population has been one of the hardest working in the world, creating an infrastructure to build on. Then there is the culture. Largely because of the influence of Christianity, the debilitating sin of envy has no social standing here, unlike the Third World where it is perhaps the chief impediment to wealth-creation and development.
Also, for the same reason, there is little bribery, which also impedes growth. Finally, there is the tradition of law, respect for private property, tradition of profit, and contractual freedom. These institutions?and not the fallacious ideas, corrupt institutions, and bad policies named above?form the core of American prosperity.

Hiroshima bomb may have carried hidden agenda: The US decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 was meant to kick-start the Cold War rather than end the Second World War, according to two nuclear historians who say they have new evidence backing the controversial theory.
Causing a fission reaction in several kilograms of uranium and plutonium and killing over 200,000 people 60 years ago was done more to impress the Soviet Union than to cow Japan, they say. And the US President who took the decision, Harry Truman, was culpable, they add.
"He knew he was beginning the process of annihilation of the species," says Peter Kuznick, director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University in Washington DC, US. "It was not just a war crime; it was a crime against humanity."

$100 Laptop
What can a $1000 laptop do that the $100 version can't?
Not much. The plan is for the $100 Laptop to do almost everything. What it will not do is store a massive amount of data.
How will these be marketed?
The idea is to distribute the machines through those ministries of education willing to adopt a policy of "one laptop per child." Initial discussions have been held with China, where there are approximately 220 million students (for which an order would drive prices way down). In addition, smaller countries will be selected for beta testing. Initial orders will be limited to a minimum of one million units (with appropriate financing).
When do you anticipate these laptops reaching the market? What do you see as the biggest hurdles?
Our preliminary schedule is to have units ready for shipment by the end of 2006 or early 2007.

Dos blogues: Weblog Ethics Survey Results: Conclusion
Overall, our findings show that personal and non-personal bloggers are distinctively different in their demographics, blogging experiences, and habits. Our findings also show that there are significant differences between personal and non-personal bloggers in the ethical beliefs they value and in the ethical practices they adhere to.
Therefore, an important point to note is that when studying the blogging population, distinctions must be made regarding the type of bloggers who are being examined to prevent any misperceptions.
In addition, the limited support from bloggers for a blogging code of ethics poses a serious problem for advocates of on-line social responsibility. If any inroads are to be made in terms of bloggers regulating themselves, consensus in the community must be developed.
Panel explores giving reporters' shield to bloggers: Certain bloggers may deserve the same privileges as professional reporters, panelists suggested Wednesday at a U.S. Senate hearing about a proposed media "shield" law.
Web Publishers Eye Your Wallet: "Every blogger is a rock band without a record contract"
Digital Citizens: The blogger: All this week the BBC News website is speaking to people whose creativity has been transformed in the digital age.
From blogging to podcasting, millions of ordinary people are becoming writers, journalists, broadcasters and film-makers thanks to increasingly affordable and accessible tools.

Editorial processes: the magazine vs. the blogs: Consider the path of a story as it winds its way through our system.
I looked at a draft of the story over the weekend, suggested changes, and spent nine hours editing it yesterday. (Usually two people share this job, but this week we're short-handed.) Then I sent it to the copy desk. There, people who are new to the story read it to see if it makes sense, if the thinking is logical, the context clear, the grammar and spelling ok, the names and titles correct. Meantime, some facts, such as names and Web addresses, are checked by a researcher. The copy desk sends the story, with questions, back to the writer and me. At the same time, the top editors of the magazine have a chance to read the story and suggest changes of their own. Potentially contentious or delicate stories are often sent upstairs to a McGraw-Hill lawyer, who might suggest further adjustments.
Today we work answering the questions, clearing up doubts, filling in holes, and cutting the story to fit on the page.
Then, wouldn't you know, the story goes back to the desk. They edit again--mostly proofreading, making sure questions have been answered, and writing display language this time around--and put it on a literal sheet of paper. Then that paper is circulated back to us. We read it and make fixes, and then carry it to the close desk, where editors make the final changes and push the button to send it to the printing press.
The editorial process of blogging is far simpler. We write, we publish. This takes our journalism into a new sphere, but carries inherent risks. How do we handle them?

2. When paying for a taxi, don't look at your wallet as you take out a note. Just grab one out at random and hand it over. It will always be the exact fare.
3. Television news bulletins usually contain a story that affects you personally at the precise moment it's aired.

BBC edits out the word terrorist: The BBC has re-edited some of its coverage of the London Underground and bus bombings to avoid labelling the perpetrators as "terrorists", it was disclosed yesterday.
Early reporting of the attacks on the BBC's website spoke of terrorists but the same coverage was changed to describe the attackers simply as "bombers". [...]
A BBC spokesman said last night: "The word terrorist is not banned from the BBC."

London's citizen reporters prove their worth with their coverage of bombing: With the tsunami on Boxing Day we saw the power of the "citizen journalist" in providing instantaneous footage of events when no camera crews or photojournalists were present. But last week marked another step in the disintegration of media hierarchies. When the tsunami happened, people were holidaying, often with video cameras to hand, in a frame of mind in which they were thinking of recording events for posterity, even if they had no inkling of what a very different experience they would be bringing home. The explosions in London happened at a time when commuters and other travellers would not have expected an event, when they would have had to search in their bags or rummage in their pockets for phones.
Blogosphere zeros in on Castro: As Hurricane Dennis bears down on the U.S. this evening, it's done some of the worst damage, ever, in Castro's decaying island tyranny on Cuba.
But something's happening. Cubans, long deprived of technology like the Internet and cell phones, except in the most controlled circumstances, somehow are getting their hands on them anyway. And they are giving live reports from every corner of Cuba, to Cuban-Americans in Miami and elsewhere, who are now posting them on Val's Babalu blog.
(ler também Why Newspapers Are Betting on Audience Participation: Under this model [what is called participatory journalism, or civic or citizen journalism], readers contribute to the newspaper. And they are doing so in many forms, including blogs, photos, audio, video and podcasts.
Whether such efforts can revive revenue for newspaper publishers is an open question. But with gloomy financial forecasts and declines in circulation, some papers are starting to see participatory journalism as their hope for reconnecting with their audiences.)

A Letter To The Terrorists, From London: What the fuck do you think you're doing?
This is London. We've dealt with your sort before. You don't try and pull this on us. [...]
We're London, and we've got our own way of doing things, and it doesn't involve tossing bombs around where innocent people are going about their lives.
And that's because we're better than you. Everyone is better than you. Our city works. We rather like it. And we're going to go about our lives. We're going to take care of the lives you ruined. And then we're going to work. And we're going down the pub.
So you can pack up your bombs, put them in your arseholes, and get the fuck out of our city.

[continua]

An Aura of Mystery Still Hovers Around the Man Who Is Deep Throat: Deep Throat, a k a W. Mark Felt, a k a "the Secret Man" of Bob Woodward's new book, was the most famous anonymous source in modern American political history. [...]
"The Secret Man" provides an intriguing if not fully satisfying portrait of the real-life relationship between Mr. Woodward and Mr. Felt, and it reaffirms the vital role that confidential sources play in keeping the public informed. Deep Throat's identity remained a mystery for more than 30 years, and his repeated insistence on what Mr. Woodward calls in these pages "secrecy at all cost" suggests that today's media-bashing climate - when reporters' right to keep sources secret is under attack - could well inhibit sources like Mr. Felt from stepping forward. [...]
"It is critical that confidential sources feel they would be protected for life," Mr. Woodward writes near the end of this slight but provocative book. "There needed to be a model out there where people could come forward or speak when contacted, knowing they would be protected."
