Religião nos Estados Unidos

Ainda a propósito do texto (contexto?) abaixo: "Regionalism and Religiosity"

Esta (...) dá-me cabo do entretenimento...

Igreja? Seita? Obra de caridade? Excelentes advogados?

O que sinceramente me preocupa é não poder mais ver os Simpsons sem saber que a voz de Bart (a senhora Nancy Cartwright) doou 10 milhões de dólares à "fé": "Cartwright's gift -- almost two times her annual salary from "The Simpsons" -- puts her top of a list of celebrity benefactors, who have handed over their hard-earned cash to the Church of Scientology. She gave even more than Tom Cruise -- who is reported to be the controversial religion's second-in-command -- who has donated $5 million in the last four years."
Fiquei sem voz!

The Capa Cache: The suitcase — actually three flimsy cardboard valises — contained thousands of negatives of pictures that Robert Capa, one of the pioneers of modern war photography, took during the Spanish Civil War before he fled Europe for America in 1939, leaving behind the contents of his Paris darkroom.

Capa assumed that the work had been lost during the Nazi invasion, and he died in 1954 on assignment in Vietnam still thinking so. But in 1995 word began to spread that the negatives had somehow survived, after taking a journey worthy of a John le Carré novel: Paris to Marseille and then, in the hands of a Mexican general and diplomat who had served under Pancho Villa, to Mexico City.

And that is where they remained hidden for more than half a century until last month, when they made what will most likely be their final trip, to the International Center of Photography in Midtown Manhattan, founded by Robert Capa’s brother, Cornell.

Teachers 32%
Intellectuals (e.g. writers, academics) 28%
Military/police leaders 21%
Musicians 12%
Trade unionists 11%
Business leaders 10%
Journalists (someone who reports for TV, radio, newspapers, 9%
Politicians 9%
Lawyers 8%
Religious leaders 8%
Film stars 6%
Sports stars 6%
None of these 15%

Primeiro, querem saber.

Afghan 'blasphemy' death sentence: An Afghan journalist has been sentenced to death by a provincial court for distributing "blasphemous" material.

Sayed Perwiz Kambakhsh, 23, was arrested in 2007 after downloading material from the internet relating to the role of women in Islamic societies. [...]

The court also threatened to arrest any reporters who protested against Kambakhsh's sentence.

Shock at death sentence passed on young journalist for blasphemy: The trial was held behind closed doors and without any lawyer defending him. [...]

Kambakhsh was supposedly arrested because of a controversial article commenting on verses in the Koran about women, although it has now been established that he was not the article’s author.

Boa vizinhança

A city councilman in Utah, Mark Easton, had a beautiful view of the east Mountains until a new neighbor purchased the lot below his house and built a new home. The home was 18 inches higher than the ordinances would allow, so Mark Easton, mad about his lost view, went to the city to make sure they enforced the lower roof line ordinance.

The new neighbor had to drop the roof line at great expense. Recently, Mark Easton called the city, and informed them that his new neighbor had installed some vents on the side of his home. Mark did not like the looks of the vents and asked the city to investigate. When they went to Mark’s home to view the vents, this is what they found:

Subverting the Smoking Ban in Germany: However some smokers' rights advocates went just a tad too far in their efforts to promote their cause. An events agency in the state of Schleswig-Holstein recently caused controversy when it started selling T-shirts on its Web site featuring a Star of David and the word "Raucher" ("smoker"), in a reference to the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear during the Third Reich. The company quickly pulled the shirts from sale after protests from Germany's Central Council of Jews.

«Menos cem mil pobres».

Novos media

New Services Help Bloggers Bring in Ad Revenue: If you're not making money off your blog, 2008 might be the year.

Bottom-Line: Media Cos. Must Restructure Or Face Consequences: Even if Internet advertising grows by 50% this year, the incremental impact would be only 1.5% on aggregate revenue for the media conglomerates. [...]
Media companies are destined to remain undervalued until they fully integrate new digital business models and develop the metrics necessary to quantify gains. Revenues, earnings and cash-flow projections are based on core businesses, many of which are declining or in flux. Companies’ legacy operations will require a complete overhaul. This involves such formidable tasks as physical and technical conversion, as well as workforce reconstruction and reduction.

Web companies' dark side: Few jobs: Some of the biggest Internet companies are growing like weeds, serving millions of customers a day and operating globally. But, as commentator Nicholas Carr points out, they tend to employee very few people. [...]
Past technological revolutions created a lot more jobs than they destroyed, but that doesn't seem to be happening with computerization, and if companies like YouTube, Skype and Craigslist are any indication, a lot more jobs may soon be at risk.

Marketings

The American Marketing Association Releases New Definition for Marketing:

The new definition reads:
"Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large."

The previous definition stated:
"Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders."

Sobre o jornalismo de tecnologia

A malta do Gizmodo pregou umas partidas no Consumer Electronics Show (CES) de 2008.

But when I see some fellow press damning us for the joke, I feel sorry for them: When did journalists become the protectors of corporations? When did this industry, defined by pranksters like Woz, get so serious and in-the-pocket of big business? This is totally pathetic.

Consumer electronics tech journalism is very tricky. Those who strictly cover commercial CE depend on a powerful handful of companies for the very lifeblood of their content. That's a dangerous position. A "favor" by a company can turn into the laziest kind of "scoop" imaginable, a scrap from the dinner table for the dogs of journalism. And every gadget journalist has wrestled with his conscience as he gains more access and becomes inseparable from the industry and depends on more and more of these scoops.

But bloggers and trade journalists, so desperate for a seat at the table with big mainstream publications have it completely backwards: You don't get more access by selling out for press credentials first chance you get, kowtowing to corporations and tradeshows and playing nice; you earn your respect by fact finding, reporting, having untouchable integrity, provocative coverage and gaining readers through your reputation for those things. Our prank pays homage to the notion of independence and independent reporting. And no matter how much access the companies give us, we won't ever stop being irreverent. That's what this prank was about and what the press should understand.

Every tech journalist has to decide whether or not he's writing for companies or for readers. When they start writing for the companies, covering all their press releases and regurgitating marketing jargon, you do no one any favors (not even the companies, which already hire press release machines).

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Learned to Love the Blog: Goodbye Dead Trees! First, after almost eight months of daily blogging for this site, I think it is safe to say that I will probably never write another thing professionally for a print publication and will spend the rest of my career–such that it will be–publishing online only.

Why? Besides saving all those trees, of course–which, let me start off the new year by being completely honest, never occurred to me until just this very second–it’s simple and obvious: The future of all media is digital going forward.

U.S. Album Sales Fell 9.5% in 2007: Album sales in the United States plunged 9.5 percent last year from 2006, as the recording industry had another weak year despite a 45 percent surge in the sale of digital tracks, according to figures released Thursday.

A total of 500.5 million albums in the form of CDs, cassettes, LPs and other formats were purchased last year, down 15 percent from the unit total for 2006, said Nielsen SoundScan, which tracks point-of-purchase sales.

The decline in album sales drops to 9.5 percent when sales of digital singles are counted as 10-track equivalent albums.

The number of digital tracks sold, meanwhile, jumped 45 percent, to 844.2 million, compared with 588.2 million in 2006, with digital album sales accounting for 10 percent of total album purchases.

Overall music purchases, including albums, singles, digital tracks and music videos, rose to 1.35 billion units, up 14 percent from 2006. [...]

The recording industry continued to benefit from mobile music, with mobile phone owners buying 220 million ring tones, the firm said.

Coisas do direito de autor, no Canadá

The same “old” line: since 1921 the Copyright Act has been amended by forty-one subsequent pieces of legislation, including major revisions in 1988 (twice), 1993 (three times), 1994, and 1997.

Forty-one times. On average, that’s once every two years and two months.

The original 1921 Act contained 9,434 words. The current Copyright Act, as consolidated after those forty-one sets of amendments, is more than triple the size of the original statute, at 31,223 words. (In both cases, the preamble, marginal notes, and schedules are excluded from the word counts.)

And, after all those amendments, what’s left of the 1924 legislation?

Not much, it turns out. A side-by-side comparison reveals that there are just 573 words (the red bit) in the current Act which have descended, unaltered in form and context, from the 1921.

Detenção e deportação europeia

No to the outrageous Directive!
Appeal to the Members of the European Parliament

In January 2008, a proposal for a directive concerning the detention and deportation of immigrants will be submitted to the European Parliament.

Since 1990, the policies of European governments with respect to immigration and asylum have resulted in a continuous reduction of the guarantees and fundamental protections of the people they affect. Europe is becoming a locked-down fortress and uses disproportionate means to prevent access to its territory and to deport unauthorised migrants.

The project before the European Parliament, if it were to be adopted, would represent yet another regression.

In foreseeing detention that could be extended up to 18 months for people whose only offence is to want to live in Europe, it holds to an inhuman logic : generalizing a policy of confinement for aliens could become the normal way of treating migrant populations.

In establishing a five-year ban from Europe for all people who are expelled, this project stigmatises the illegal immigrants and transforms them into delinquents who must be deported.

The proposed directive which will be presented to the Parliament is the first in this domain to be submitted to a procedure of co-decision with the Council of Ministers. The Parliament therefore has the possibility to once and for all put an end to this policy which goes against the human values at the heart of the European project and which give it its meaning.

Today, the Members of the European Parliament have an historical responsibility : act as to not let Europe fall back to the dark era of segregation between nationals and undesirables through the systematisation of detention camps and forced repatriation.

We call on the Members of the European Parliament to assume their responsibility and reject this project.
