466 emitidas no Jornal da Tarde da RTP1 (122 edições);
842 emitidas no Telejornal da RTP1 (122 edições);
637 emitidas no Jornal 2 da RTP2 (122 edições);
380 emitidas no bloco informativo das 24h00 da RTPN (61 edições);
368 emitidas no Telejornal Regional da RTP Açores (91 edições);
536 emitidas no Telejornal Regional da RTP Madeira (88 edições)
",

Why Tax Havens Are a Blessing: First, if you live in a developed country, your taxes are probably much lower today than they were 30 years ago, thanks in part to tax havens. [...]
Second, European duchies and Caribbean isles aren’t the only places that welcome tax refugees. The United States, for instance, could be considered the world’s largest tax haven. [...]
Finally, there is even a moral case for tax havens: They play a critical role in protecting people who are subject to religious, ethnic, sexual, political, or racial persecution.

Dos media

Newspaper advertising revenue fell 7.9 percent in 2007, the second-worst year in more than half a century, the Newspaper Association of America said on Friday. Those figures include continued growth in online advertising.
Newspaper Print Ad Sales Fall 9.4%, Most on Record: U.S. newspapers suffered their worst drop in print advertising sales since industry record- keeping began 57 years ago, hammered by the housing-market slump and competition from the Internet.

Print More Trusted Source of Information Than Internet: The MediaVest study also found:
* There remains very low duplication between the audiences for print publications and their online companions. Duplication ranged from 1% to 6% for every category except entertainment, where some titles reached duplication rates of 10%.
* Print titles should deliver something different with their online extensions, according to 79% of respondents who were dual magazine and digital users. But only 44% said they strongly believed that publishers' sites really offer something unique.

UN rejects water as basic human right: a special resolution proposed by Germany and Spain at the UN human rights council was stripped of references that recognized access to water as a human right. The countries also chose to scrap the idea of creating an international watchdog to investigate the issue, choosing instead to appoint a new consultant that would make recommendations over the next three years.

Water and war: Problems of water scarcity and water pollution affect human and ecosystem health, and hinder economic and agricultural development. Local and regional problems, in turn, may affect the rest of the world by threatening food supplies and global economic development. The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development concludes that these problems could result in a series of local and regional water crises, with serious global implications.

Is there likely to be violent conflict over water in the future? Past experience suggests that this is unlikely. However, many claim that the probability of conflict is increasing.

O terrorismo actual

How Terrorism Works: An insightful analyst of modern terrorism is Scott Atran [...] Here are ten conclusions I've selected from it:
* Global Al-Qaeda is now a viral, social movement and political ideology, not a well organized operation with command and control. [...]
* The new wave of terrorism is about "youth culture", not the Koran.[...]
* Prison radicalization in the USA vs. Europe differs significantly: Foreign-born Muslims, like Jews, are underrepresented in US prisons. [...]
* Social welfare is not a solution, adding only to alienation and boredom and to a hole in one's life more readily filled by radicalized dreams of justice and glory. [...]
* Publicity is the oxygen of terrorism. [...]
* Non-Muslims should never preach to Muslims about what is true Islam. [...]
* Stop trying to impose ethnocentric values of Freedom and Democracy on people. [...]
* PEW surveys show that in the Muslim world support of "Freedom and Democracy" has declined since the onset of the Iraq War. Both radical and traditional Islam value Justice and Fairness, not Freedom and Democracy. [...]
* Stop wasting millions of dollars studying the Koran and trying to figure out what terrorists think from studies of Islam. [...]
* Stop trying to generate a catch-all approach to terrorist profiling, radicalization processes, etc. [...]

Walt Disney cartoons ‘contain secret messages on the environment’: The stories of animated Disney characters, from Snow White in 1937 to the clownfish Nemo in 2003, have built “a critical awareness of contested environmental issues”, according to David Whitley, a lecturer in English.

While Disney movies are often regarded as little more than escapism, and have even been criticised as bland populism, many feature messages about conservation and the relationship between people and the natural world that have proved to be highly influential, Dr Whitley said.

Researchers Play Tune Recorded Before Edison: For more than a century, since he captured the spoken words “Mary had a little lamb” on a sheet of tinfoil, Thomas Edison has been considered the father of recorded sound. But researchers say they have unearthed a recording of the human voice, made by a little-known Frenchman, that predates Edison’s invention of the phonograph by nearly two decades.
The 10-second recording of a singer crooning the folk song “Au Clair de la Lune” was discovered earlier this month in an archive in Paris by a group of American audio historians. It was made, the researchers say, on April 9, 1860, on a phonautograph, a machine designed to record sounds visually, not to play them back. But the phonautograph recording, or phonautogram, was made playable — converted from squiggles on paper to sound — by scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif.

Au Clair de la Lune--French folk song (1860 Phonautogram)
Scott recorded someone singing an excerpt from the French folksong "Au Clair de la Lune" on April 9, 1860, and deposited the results with the Académie des Sciences in 1861. The existence of a tuning-fork calibration trace allows us to compensate for the irregular recording speed of the hand-cranked cylinder. The sheet contains the beginning line of the second verse-"Au clair de la lune, Pierrot répondit"-and is the earliest audibly recognizable record of the human voice yet recovered.

Uma excelente pergunta:

Quem vai defender as nossas liberdades?

The High Price of Ethics: All professionals have at least four loyalties. First, we have a loyalty to ourselves as human beings and as moral agents. We have personal needs as well as a moral compass that tells us what are the right things and the wrong things to do as human beings.

Second, we have a loyalty to our employers. In return for a paycheck, employers have the right to expect us to be loyal to their business practices.

Third, journalists have a loyalty to other journalists. When one journalist violates professional standards and practices, other journalists are painted with the same brush.

Finally, we have an obligation to society to act in ways that promote the common good.

In this particular case, Mabie's loyalties to himself, his profession and to society outweighed his loyalty to his employer.

Is IKEA Giving Danes the Doormat Treatment? Emotions against IKEA are running high in Denmark, where researchers claim the wildly popular Swedish home furnishings company only names cheap doormats and wall-to-wall carpeting after Danish towns, reserving Swedish names for its more expensive furniture. The discovery has the proud Danes itching for revenge. [...]

Two Danish academics, Klaus Kjöller of the University of Copenhagen and Tröls Mylenberg of the University of Southern Denmark, conducted a thorough analysis of the names used in the IKEA catalog. They concluded that the Swedish names are reserved for the "better" products, and that even Norwegian names manage to make it into the bed department. But the "lesser" products bear Danish names like "Roskilde" and "Köge."

"Doormats and runners, as well as inexpensive wall-to-wall carpeting are third-class, if not seventh-class, items when it comes to home furnishings," Kjöller is quoted as saying in Nyhedsavisen, a Danish free paper. The stuff that goes on the floor, Kjöller said, is about as low as it gets. He accused the home furnishings company of "Swedish imperialism."

Coisas do jornalismo

Terá mudado o passado: a tentação do historiador.

Wired: Your work suggests that we all have the capacity for evil, and that it's simply environmental influences that tip the balance from good to bad. Doesn't that absolve people from taking responsibility for their choices?

Philip Zimbardo: No. People are always personally accountable for their behavior. If they kill, they are accountable. However, what I'm saying is that if the killing can be shown to be a product of the influence of a powerful situation within a powerful system, then it's as if they are experiencing diminished capacity and have lost their free will or their full reasoning capacity.

Situations can be sufficiently powerful to undercut empathy, altruism, morality and to get ordinary people, even good people, to be seduced into doing really bad things -- but only in that situation.

Understanding the reason for someone's behavior is not the same as excusing it. Understanding why somebody did something -- where that why has to do with situational influences -- leads to a totally different way of dealing with evil. It leads to developing prevention strategies to change those evil-generating situations, rather than the current strategy, which is to change the person.
