I have never seen so many senior newspaper executives so depressed and frightened for their future
Turn and Face the Change -- With Newspaper Industry in Crisis, 'Everything's on the Table': Faced with an unprecedented crisis that combines cyclical turbulence with metastasizing digital technology that steals away revenue and readers at an alarming and seemingly accelerating rate (while offering newspapers only stingy payoffs), publishers and editors everywhere have thrown away their rule books — and, to find their way in this new and alien environment, are ready to implement previously unthinkable changes.
Or are they?
Ainda o Peer Review
Incompetence Tops List of Complaints About Peer Reviewers: Incompetence by their reviewers was the most common problem reported by scientists who submitted manuscripts to scholarly journals. Almost two-thirds voiced that beef in a survey administered to scientists employed by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
Perceptions of Ethical Problems with Scientific Journal Peer Review: An Exploratory Study
Peer reviewing: privilege and responsibility: Peer review is a central tenet in research across all disciplines. It is a key feature in monitoring the advance of knowledge, especially in academic publishing. This article investigates the development of peer review from the seventeenth century to the present, and analyses significant aspects of the process. It also attempts to clarify some criticisms and make suggestions about the role of peer review in the current climate.

Back to politics...
The Tiananmen Massacre Victims Map: On the night of June 3-4, 1989, troops of China’s People’s Liberation Army moved into Beijing to crush the pro-democracy demonstrations that began in April of that year. The number killed remains unknown although estimates range from several hundred to several thousand. The government of the People’s Republic of China insists that the demonstrators were counter-revolutionary criminals. Tens of thousands were imprisoned in the political crackdown that followed.
A few years afterward, Ding Zilin, the mother of a murdered student, began to investigate the massacre. Eventually, she and other victims’ relatives formed the Tiananmen Mothers. They have gathered information about 188 victims of China’s Communist regime. This map, which is based on their work, shows the places where 176 victims were killed or the hospitals to which their bodies were taken. Thirteen known victims remain unaccounted for.

Sobre os embargos nos blogues
Embargo Breakers: Who Exactly Do You Write For? It seems that recently the problem with embargoes and breaking them has grown acute again. I for one have seen at least 3 embargoes broken this week only and I can imagine there are others where I am simply unaware of the embargo time. [...]
As a summary, this is what happens when an embargo is broken: everyone is damaged to a certain extent while the blogger enjoys the attention, the links and Techmeme position (or whatever) as well. I know that bloggers are not supposed to worry about their competition or even the companies/services/applications they cover. But are they also not supposed to care about their readers? Is the status of the first one in the know more valuable than what you actually deliver to those for whom you are supposed to write? I think every blogger who intentionally breaks embargoes from time to time should ask himself (or herself) this particular question and if you actually care about traffic and ad revenue only, go ahead and keep breaking it.

Idade olímpica
I believe that any reasonable observer already understands that age records have been forged. This story now is really about Internet censorship, the act of removing evidence while at the same time claiming that the evidence is wrong. For the first time I watched search records shift under my feet like sand, facts draining down a hole in the Internet. Will this stand?

What Makes for a Good Blog?
A sério, What makes for a good blog? Like Merlin, I'm discovering fewer and fewer good blogs these days. Part of it is that blogging as I would define it is passe. These days people are writing for online magazines like Gawker or Tumblring or Twittering or Facebooking or doing a million other things on the web. But people are also listening to a bunch of bad advice -- CALL NOW TO FIND OUT HOW TO MAKE MONEY WITH BLOGS AND WE'LL THROW IN THIS JUICER ABSOLUTELY FREE -- instead of Merlin's level-headedness.

Só 77?...
China Received 77 Olympic Protest Requests, But Approved None: Chinese authorities have not approved any of the 77 applications they received from people who wanted to hold protests during the Beijing Olympics, state media reported Monday.
The state-run Xinhua News Agency said the applications received since Aug. 1, a week before the games opened, were submitted by 149 people, including three from overseas. The complaints ranged from labor and medical disputes to inadequate welfare, it said.
But 74 of the applications were withdrawn because the problems "were properly addressed by relevant authorities or departments through consultations," Xinhua said, citing an unidentified spokesman for the Public Security Bureau.

RPs e blogues
What do the freaking tech bloggers want? Bloggers are being commoditized. If we just go to press conferences, or only deal with embargoed news, and report on the same news everyone else is reporting on, well, then, just what reason is there for our business to exist? How will we build an audience that’s any different, than, say, TechCrunch or Fortune’s or ZDNet’s efforts? How will we justify to our sponsors that they should sponsor us as we are doing the same thing as everyone else? Especially if we have a smaller audience? Yeah, advertisers really love getting THOSE kinds of sales pitches. Imagine walking into a big company and putting up a Powerpoint that says “we’re the same as Techcrunch, but smaller.” What’s the chances you’ll walk out with a sponsorship?

Uma questão de doutoramento
Iranian interior minister's fake Oxford diploma & Iranian minister flaunts bogus Oxford degree: When sceptical MPs questioned the eligibility of Ali Kordan to be Iran's interior minister, he believed he had the perfect riposte; a law degree obtained from one of the world's most elite institutions, the University of Oxford.
He even flaunted a graduation certificate on university-headed paper purporting to award him an "honorary doctorate of law" for "opening a new chapter" in comparative legal studies.
Now Kordan's extravagant claims have landed him in hot water and severely embarrassed the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after the university denied ever having awarded him a degree.

Violência dos blogs
(1): A violência que se generalizou na esfera bloguista obedece a três regras fundamentais:
1 - elege o insulto e a difamação como leis "informativas";
2 - cultiva o anonimato;
