9/11 = JFK?

Seven CIA Veterans Challenge 9/11 Commission Report: Seven CIA veterans have severely criticized the official account of 9/11 and have called for a new investigation. “I think at simplest terms, there’s a cover-up. The 9/11 Report is a joke,” said Raymond McGovern, 27-year veteran of the CIA, who chaired National Intelligence Estimates during the seventies. “There are a whole bunch of unanswered questions. And the reason they’re unanswered is because this administration will not answer the questions,” he said.

Nice job, Yahoo. What, you can't even post a link to a reason why you're closing? No advice for what the podcast owners that actually promoted your service, about what they're supposed to do with their channels? Is the site going poof, just not being supported at all in the future, or what?

Due to indifference – “I have nothing to hide” – and lack of interest in what happens to their personal data, citizens share responsibility for the disappearance of privacy in The Netherlands. While Time magazine praised ‘You’ as person of the year, the jury gives ‘You’ an award for your acceptance of far reaching intrusions upon your privacy.

E deste último texto retiro e modifico o último parágrafo (a negrito):

[act.: Leading EU countries oppose a regulatory body for telecom markets: The dispute about the creation of an EU regulatory body for European telecom markets is escalating. In a joint letter to the EU commission, Germany, five other EU states have voiced their opposition to such a European super authority. There is no need for "institutional reform", they write in their letter, which was signed by representatives of German, French, British, Spanish, and Swedish economic ministries. A representative of the State Ministry signed on behalf of Luxembourg.
The letter was occasioned by plans for a new EU framework for telecom markets; the proposal is expected to be presented on November 13.]

Portugal plans to launch telecoms regulator during its EU presidency: Portugal yesterday put itself on a collision course with national regulators by announcing it will use its forthcoming European Union presidency to launch a single super-regulator to police the telecoms industry across all 27 member states.
Mario Lino, the Portuguese public works minister, said the creation of a single telecoms regulator for the EU would be a "priority" for the country's presidency, which begins in July.
"These are important dossiers for the future of the sector that include relevant issues such as the creation of a European regulator and the way this regulator interacts with other national regulators," Mr Lino said.
The minister's pledge follows a series of complaints from Viviane Reding, the EU information society commissioner, who has responsibility for telecoms. She has consistently argued that existing European regulations are not applied even-handedly by national regulators across the EU.

Newspaper publishers in a jam: Many of the pundits say the biggest hurdle the newspapers have is the transition from print to online. In fact, most already have made the transition, and most cannot make the online model work well enough to make up for the downslide in print. They never will.
The reason is simple: In an online world, there are too many bloated newspapers.
What needs to be addressed is the simple concept of redundancy. A search in Google News demonstrates the extent of problem. A hot story of any sort might have 1,000 to 2,000 links from 1,000 to 2,000 news outlets.
As more newspapers make the mistake of eliminating reporting jobs, they [have] nothing special to offer. There are no foreign correspondents anymore.
More often than not, many of the 1,000 to 2,000 stories are the same Associated Press or Reuters reports. In a few rare instances, there will be some additional material contributed by local reporters.
As more newspapers make the mistake of eliminating reporting jobs, they fall into the pit of redundancy with nothing special to offer
. There are no foreign correspondents anymore. There are hardly any stringers on the site of a breaking story anymore.
The only papers or news organizations that can expect to survive will be those with lots of original content available only at their individual sites. The operations that rely more on universally available news feeds will be at the mercy of a fickle public -- one that doesn't care where they read a particular story, especially if it is the exact same story with the exact same headline. [...]
There are now plenty of news sites to choose from. I would argue that there are too many newspapers.

Big media enters the spin zone: Will major media conglomerates soon unload some of their biggest assets? [...]
And it may be fair to suggest that some media companies are too bloated and that pruning some divisions might help boost investors’ returns. But all the spinoff and sale talk seems a just bit odd now since the timing isn’t exactly right.
This summer’s credit crunch has led to a reassessment of risk both among possible acquirers as well as investors
. As such, investors may not be willing to buy shares of newly public companies that are considered big media cast-offs. What’s more, sellers may not be as eager to make new deals, especially if they’d have to do so with debt.
“Media companies that may have been exploring deals now are probably waiting to see how the markets settle. The uncertainty has caused many deals to be put on hold. Media firms that may have been considering spin-offs may not get the same price they would have months ago,” said Glover Lawrence, co-founder of McNamee Lawrence & Co, an investment bank based in Boston.

Iraq war budget jumps for 2008: After smothering efforts by war critics in Congress to drastically cut U.S. troop levels in Iraq, President Bush plans to ask lawmakers next week to approve another massive spending measure -- totaling nearly $200 billion -- to fund the war through next year, Pentagon officials said.
If Bush's spending request is approved, 2008 will be the most expensive year of the Iraq war.

Media Industry Helped Drug Firms Fight Ad Restraints: the drug industry found powerful allies among media and advertising firms who were determined to protect one of their biggest and fastest-growing advertising categories.
The toughest drug-ad restriction in early drafts of the bill gave the FDA authority to block a drug company from advertising a medication that carried serious safety concerns. That was left on the cutting-room floor. The FDA will get new power to require drug companies to submit TV ads for review before they run, but it can only recommend changes, not require them. The bill lets the agency levy fines for false and misleading ads.

Arctic Ice Melt Opens Northwest Passage: Arctic ice has shrunk to the lowest level on record, new satellite images show, raising the possibility that the Northwest Passage that eluded famous explorers will become an open shipping lane.
The European Space Agency said nearly 200 satellite photos this month taken together showed an ice-free passage along northern Canada, Alaska and Greenland, and ice retreating to its lowest level since such images were first taken in 1978.
The waters are exposing unexplored resources, and vessels could trim thousands of miles from Europe to Asia by bypassing the Panama Canal. The seasonal ebb and flow of ice levels has already opened up a slim summer window for ships.

O Sol visto à lupa - o outro Sol, claro...

A barba é verdadeira e o resto?

Researcher: Bin Laden's beard is real, video is not: On the Friday before the sixth anniversary of 9/11, Osama bin Laden appeared in a new video, his first since prior to the U.S. presidential elections in 2004. In analyzing the video, Neal Krawetz of Hactor Factor, an expert on digital image forensics, said in his latest blogs that the video contained many visual and audio splices, and that all of the modifications were of very low quality.
Most striking is bin Laden's beard, which has been gray in recent images. For this video it is black. "As far as my tools can detect, there has been no image manipulation of the bin Laden portion of the image beyond contrast adjustment. His beard really does appear to be that color."

Web users differ from mainstream agenda: The news agendas of traditional media websites have very little overlap with news sites based on stories selected by web users themselves, according to a new study comparing the content of mainstream sites in the US with popular user sites such as Digg.

The findings come at a time when news organisations around the world are investing heavily in their web operations in an attempt to engage readers and viewers online.

The report, published on Wednesday by the Project for Excellence in Journalism, a research organisation that specialises in analysing the performance of the press. It compared news coverage from the week of June 24 to June 29 on 48 mainstream news outlets to that on user sites Digg, Del.icio.us and Reddit. All three of these operate without news editors and instead let users decide what is most important or interesting.

Few of the top stories selected by editors on mainstream sites appeared on the user-generated sites.
