Men are Media Hogs: Media consumption habits of men and women differ, particularly on the Internet. A report from Forrester Research called "Men are from CNET, Women are from iVillage" identifies the divergence in men and women's behavior online, as well as with other forms of media.
In a typical week, men spend 10.2 hours on a PC, 6.7 of which are spent on the Internet. Women spend a total of 8.5 hours using a computer, 5.3 of those are online. Media consumption across all categories, except reading magazines, is higher among men by an average of seven hours per week.
What Blogs, Podcasts, Feeds Mean to Bottom Line: The average consumer of blogs, RSS/XML feeds and Podcasts is male, earns big bucks and, in the case of Podcasts, is a youngster?all good to know if your company is thinking about jumping into the blogosphere, according to new research from Jupiter Research.
That's an elite group to market to, but it's a tiny group.

Irreplaceable Exuberance: The growth of the Internet has paralleled that of most industries based on revolutionary technology. Canals, railroads, telegraphs, telephones, cars, radios, personal computers - all progressed (or are progressing) through four phases of development: boom, bust, mature growth and decay. [...]
Today, the industry has progressed to the third phase of development, mature growth (which, happily, is usually the longest and most profitable phase of the four). Netscape itself was a casualty of the cycle, but other companies that learned from it are now posting performance that justifies the early Internet hype. A mere seven years into its existence, for example, Google is generating about half as much cash as Time Warner, a global media conglomerate with nearly a century of history and some 85,000 employees.

Para estimular as relações Portugal-China: New Book Presents Evidence Proving Pre-Columbian Chinese Maritime Survey of the World: Author Anatole Andro spent two-and-a-half years evaluating Chinese and European historical documents pertaining to the alleged Ming Chinese circumnavigation of the world one hundred years before the great European explorations. The author found that not only did such evidence exist, historians and investigators had knowledge of it. Many even commented on some of the evidence, then provided tenuous explanations for it, ignored it, or supplanted it.
Such historical records are not common, but neither are they obscure. However, because of the passing of time, their meanings have become blurred. For these the author provides explanations. An example is the reason of Portugal's leadership in Renaissance exploration.
It has been long held that Portugal's motive in going to sea was to seek a trade route to the Orient's spice sources. Through detailed analyses the author convincingly argued that the real cause was simply that the Portuguese learned that it could be done, and the impetus could only have been furnished by the Chinese.
The reason we are mostly ignorant of the Chinese maritime programs, according to the author, is that the events took place at a time when European knowledge of the Orient was scant and imprecise.

On Advertising: Blogosphere increasingly international: Some companies that advertise on blogs pay from a few pence up to £1, or $1.80, per click on blog ads, according to Dusan Hamlin, media communications director at Isobar, a British agency involved in online advertising. This is slightly less than what is paid for equivalent clicks on blogs in the United States, where highly specialized sites can charge a premium, he said.
"There is definitely activity out there," Hamlin said, "but people are still approaching blogs with skepticism. If you are concerned about how your brand is perceived, blogs might not be the venue for you."
That may have been the result when L'Oréal, the French cosmetics company, created a blog around a fake character, Claire. The character praised a new anti-aging cream, but was eventually unmasked by bloggers who attacked the cosmetics company with vicious messages online.
Another problem with blogs, Hamlin said, is that there are no controls on what part of the blog your ad might appear next to. "By advertising on a blog, you leave yourself open to both positive and negative impact," he said.
Blogs "do, however, show an interesting shift in the way people are using the Internet."

The Rise of the Citizen Editor: I, too, believe that as media evolves to more and more utilize content submitted by non-journalists, the need for professional editors will grow. Will that be a net gain in jobs as a result? It's a trend journalism schools should be on top of.

The son of a peasant father and an illiterate mother, brought up in a home with no books, he took almost 40 years to go from metalworker to civil servant to editor in a publishing house to newspaper editor. He was 60 before he earned recognition at home and abroad with Baltasar and Blimunda.
As a child, he spent vacations with his grandparents in a village called Azinhaga. When his grandfather suffered a stroke and was to be taken to Lisbon for treatment, Saramago recalls, "He went into the yard of his house, where there were a few trees, fig trees, olive trees. And he went one by one, embracing the trees and crying, saying good-bye to them because he knew he would not return. To see this, to live this, if that doesn?t mark you for the rest of your life," Saramago says, "you have no feeling."

Bloggers dog big media while moving mainstream: more bloggers ? who love to shine a light and heap scorn on the mainstream media's foibles ? are increasingly crossing over mainstream lines, writing opinion pieces for newspapers and media Web sites while cutting partnership deals or even selling their sites to traditional news outlets.
It isn't a case of bloggers "selling out" and losing their feisty character and independence, local and national bloggers say.
It's more a case of a natural convergence in which bloggers break into the mainstream media due to their online popularity ? and the mainstream media experiment with bloggers and blogging in the face of dramatic changes within the media world.
