À atenção de quem de direito: Football referees do favour home teams, study shows: Academics have proved what Premiership football managers have been complaining about for years ? that referees are inconsistent and favour home teams. Analysing over 2,500 English Premiership matches, researchers discovered that referees were statistically more likely to award yellow and red cards against the away team ? even when home advantage, game importance and crowd size were taken into account. [...]
As well as finding a distinct home bias in refereeing disciplinary action and inconsistency between referees, the research also highlighted that:
- underdogs tend to incur a higher rate of disciplinary sanction than favourites
- the number of disciplinary offences tends to be higher in matches between evenly-balanced teams, in matches with end-of-season outcomes at stake and in matches with higher attendances
- home teams appear to play more aggressively in front of larger crowds
- the crowd size did not appear to influence the incidence of disciplinary sanction against the away team
- there was no evidence that the behaviour of either teams or referees is any different when the match is televised.

White Trash, Fast Food: How Globalization Is Creating a New European Underclass: We know, for example, that today's proletariat is richer than the worker of generations past. Indeed, with a little skill, he can tap into the coffers of the state's social safety net, which provides him with access to an income comparable to those of police officers, warehouse workers and taxi drivers. Thus, it is not material poverty that separates him from others.

Rather, what stand out are the symptoms of intellectual neglect. The poor of today watch television for half the day. These days, television producers even refer to what they call "Underclass TV." The new proletariat eats a lot of fatty foods and he enjoys smoking and drinking -- a lot. About 8 percent of Germans consume 40 percent of all the alcohol sold in the country. While he may be a family man, his families are often broken. And on Election Day, he casts a protest vote for the extreme left or right wing party, sometimes switching quickly from one to the other.

But the main thing that sets the modern poor apart from the industrial age pauper is a sheer lack of interest in education. Today's proletariat has little education and no interest in obtaining more. Back in the early days of industrialization, the poor joined worker associations that often doubled as educational associations. The modern member of the underclass, by contrast, has completely shunned personal betterment.

He likewise makes little effort to open the door to the future for his own children. Their language skills are as bad as their ability to concentrate. The rising rate of illiteracy is matched by the shrinking opportunities to integrate the underclass. The Americans, not ones to mince words, call them "white trash."

"Sequestered science" is scientific knowledge concealed from the public. Since science is built on the sharing of information, decisions to sequester data can hinder advancement in research and place public health in jeopardy. Sequestered Science: The Consequences of Undisclosed Knowledge, the latest issue of the Duke University School of Law?s journal Law and Contemporary Problems, features several articles that discuss the tradeoffs involved in decisions to sequester science.

Newspaper Sites See Record Traffic in September: September was a banner month for online newspaper sites, which attracted more than 58 million readers that month, according to a Q3 Nielsen/NetRatings report conducted for the Newspaper Association of America (NAA).
This was the highest amount of unique visitors for paper sites ever, the industry group said. On average, over 56.9 million people visited newspaper sites each month in Q3 2006, up almost 24 percent since Q3 2005.
Newspapers are urged to reach out to Web: Online journalists warned a meeting of newspaper editors Thursday that their industry's survival depends on how well they can engage and excite the masses of readers on the Web.
While delving into the digital age may seem daunting, "it's not nearly as frightening as what will happen to journalism if we don't embrace it," Jim Brady, executive editor of washingtonpost.com, said during the Associated Press Managing Editors annual conference.

De pequenino é que se adapta o menino: Scottish School 1st to Use Palm-Vein Biometrics: A Scottish school has turned to biometrics as part of a nationwide push to encourage children to eat healthier meals.
The cafeteria at Todholm Primary School in Paisley, Scotland, has gone cashless, and students are buying lunches by holding their hands over a palm-vein recognition unit produced by Glasgow-based Yarg Biometrics. It?s the first school to use the system. Inside is the same palm-vein scanner from Japan?s Fujitsu that can now be found on thousands of bank cash machines across Japan.
The system relies on an infrared image of the palm of a user?s hand. It reveals the pattern of veins present under the skin, and from this an algorithm can confirm identity of the user. It takes into account identifying features such as the number of veins, their position and the points at which they cross, and offers a higher level of security than competing technologies including voice print, facial recognition, fingerprint recognition and iris scan, according to Fujitsu.

Putting blogs to work for Wall Street: Collective Intellect has a goal: Make bloggers work for The Man.
The company has created a service that combs through thousands of blogs, news sites, chat rooms and other Web sites every day and then surfaces rumors and news reports that might be of interest to traders or corporate public-relations executives. Start-ups like Monitor 110 provide similar services.
The idea is to give traders back the early and easy access to critical data that they used to have when this information came through many fewer channels. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, a Bloomberg terminal or subscriptions to news services could give you a jump on the hoi polloi. Today, it's the masses that often have the jump, thanks to blogs and other tipster sites.

Enfim, a acompanhar.

The way it is written makes you think in a different way than, say, a daily newspaper does.

(já agora: Despite popular belief, the world is not running out of oil: "there will always be some oil available at a price, perhaps $10 to $100 a gallon." [...]
Other myths that [economic geologist Eric Cheney] wants to dispel include:
* Only basic extraction and processing costs affect economic geology. That fails to account for such costs as exploration, transportation, taxes and societal and environmental programs.
* Production always damages the environment. Accidents do happen, Cheney said, but much of the perception is based on problems of the past and don't reflect current reality. "It's inevitable that there are going to be oil spills, just like tere are traffic accidents on the freeway," he said. "We hope we can manage them, but nothing is risk free."
* Mineral deposits are excessively profitable. Despite widely reported huge oil company profits in the last year, Cheney notes that as a percentage of company revenues oil profits lag far behind those of some major software and banking companies.
* Transportation costs are trivial. In fact, the retail cost of building materials such as sand and gravel are largely driven by the cost of moving them from one place to another, particularly in crowded urban areas. Moving quarries and pits farther away from where people live only increases those costs.
* Ore deposits are uniform. While a valued ore can be found in a large continuous deposit, often it is mixed with other kinds of minerals and extraction becomes more expensive.
* Resources are randomly distributed and so, if human population encroaches, a mine or quarry should simply be able to relocate.)

You talk to as many people as you can, you read what you can, you find interesting stories and you chase them down. The fact that we are in a virtual world, once you get used to it, it becomes very much like the job I?ve been doing for years.

Depois da cápsula do tempo do Yahoo! ter sidocancelada, "Britain's bloggers make history": A digital time capsule detailing a day in the life of hundreds of thousands of Britons is to be posted on a website and then archived permanently at the British Library.
The actors Stephen Fry and Sir Derek Jacobi, the writer Bill Bryson and television historian Bettany Hughes are among those who have already agreed to record their experiences this Tuesday for the ?One Day in History? project organised by the National Trust (NT).
The idea is based on the burgeoning phenomenon of blogging, in which everyone from anti-war campaigners to call girls, and from police officers to government ministers, as well as thousands of ordinary people, jot their experiences and thoughts on personal websites.
In the NT project, described as a ?blog for the national record?, contributors are asked to write between 100 and 1,000 words about their day, in English or Welsh.

Ninguém me pôs nenhuma pressão.

European bloggers find their voice: Readership of blogs in Europe is catching up with the US, but the most popular blogs are still dominated by Americans, according to new research which compares bloggers of different nationalities.
However blogs are becoming an increasingly important part of political life in both Europe and the US, with more than a quarter of readers of the websites spurred to political or civic action.
A study by Edelman, the public relations company, and Technorati, the blog search engine, found that the top 100 most influential bloggers worldwide ? measured by the number of links they receive from other blogs ? were almost all from the US, with only a satirical Italian blog (also published in English) breaking in at number 28.

They've always said, 'We'll be only focused on search.' How does (the Pyra purchase) have anything to do with search? It doesn't," said Danny Sullivan, publisher of industry newsletter SearchEngineWatch.com.
Quando o Google comprou o YouTube, "I still think Google is crazy :)" (complementado com este "I was wrong").

A trip to the Geocities homepage on the "Wayback Machine" circa December 19, 1996 (courtesy of The Internet Archive) yields this decidedly quaint statement from the company: "We have more than 200,000 individuals sharing their thoughts and passions with the world, and creating the most diverse and unique content on the Web." Replace "200,000" with "100 million" and you could almost imagine this sentence appearing on the MySpace homepage.
The Geocities vs. MySpace comparison not only demonstrates the commonalities between the internet of 1996 and 2006, but it also provides a point of departure for understanding concepts of online presence in the Web 2.0 era. While the Geocities model relied on the metaphors of a place (cities, neighborhoods, homepages), MySpace anchors presence through metaphors of a person (profiles, blogs, links to videos, etc.). Geocities encouraged us to create our own cities and neighborhoods as points of entry to our personal worlds; MySpace cuts to the chase and enables direct access to the person, as well as access to his or her social world. And whether we call the current world 2.0 or 10.0, there's no question that the internet of today will look positively beta to future generations."

Já era há um ano: "If [Google] built out a hosting platform for people to upload all kinds of content that could be searched by Google and monetised by Google, like video and podcasts... it takes money to do, and with the search capabilities as their strong suit it could be something they could do," [Gartner analyst Allen] Weiner said. "Google could say, 'We'll host it for you; you point to us.' That could be huge."
Problemas? "by plunging into new markets with seeming abandon, Google is creating a lot of enemies whose survival may depend on making sure it doesn't succeed in them all".

Smart Move or Silly Money 2.0? Everyone from Time Warner and Viacom to Yahoo! and Microsoft is under enormous pressure to acquire the next MySpace or YouTube. But amid steadily rising valuations, Old and New Media executives alike are afraid of overpaying and being punished by their shareholders.

[Richard Parsons, the chairman and CEO of Time Warner] said, ?where is it going and how do you make a business out of it? Is it going to take over edited or professional content? No. I don?t think its going to overrun TV or movies.?
Online Ad Agency Says Google, YouTube Need to Tackle Video Organization and Presentation: Talk of video and social networking, two core elements of the YouTube site, dominated the quarterly call. While Organic has seen clients' third-quarter interactive advertising spending increase 15 percent to 20 percent year-over-year, the vast branding budgets of Fortune 1000 companies have yet to migrate from TV to the Web, [digital ad agency Organic Inc.'s chief executive, Mark Kingdon] said.
That's because Web companies haven't figured out how to make video advertising appealing to them, he said. Yahoo's structured display advertising allows companies to create big brand splashes on its content pages. In the same way, Google, YouTube and others hoping to make money in the video space need to come up with a new way for advertisers to reach video viewers, Kingdon said.
Bravo, Comedy Central get boost from Net homes: If you have an Internet connection at home, odds are you're watching less television. Maybe as much as 25% less, depending on the broadcast or cable network, according to research now being distributed to TV executives by Nielsen/NetRatings Inc.
"It's not that people are abandoning TV for the Internet. Sometimes, they do both," said Mainak Mazumdar, the company's vice president of Product Marketing and Measurement Science. "We only have 24 hours a day... (that's) a finite amount of time to consume media."

2. Write in inverted pyramid style: first get to the point and mention the core ideas, then fill in the details in later paragraphs. The first and second sentence should allow people to decide if they want to continue reading this.

The Inverted Pyramid For Bloggers: while the inverted pyramid is good for newspapers (as much as it hurts actual writing, it makes the job a whole lot easier), it is a terrible idea for blogging. First off, it shouldn?t even be considered in short posts, since the blogger doesn?t have to worry about the reader reading to the end, since they always will. As for long posts, since blogs aren?t limited by space, the last thing a blogger should do is try to bore the readers who bother to stick around for the whole post.

This is the scenario known to economists as the ultimatum game. [...]
?In a sense, suicide bombers are playing a version of the ultimatum game. Their sense of injustice is such that they are willing to pay the highest possible cost. For models of behaviour which assume that self-interest is all important, it has always been a mystery why people go to war or sacrifice themselves for their nation, their religion, or even for abstract principles. To explain these types of behaviours, we need to take account of how human actions are governed by emotion.?

1) a posição oficial norte-americana ("President Bush's Statement on North Korea Nuclear Test"): Last night the government of North Korea proclaimed to the world that it had conducted a nuclear test. We're working to confirm North Korea's claim. Nonetheless, such a claim itself constitutes a threat to international peace and security.

2) a posição oficial do Conselho de Segurança das Nações Unidas ("Security Council members 'strongly condemn' nuclear test by DPR Korea"): The United Nations today strongly condemned the reported nuclear test by the Democratic People?s Republic of Korea (DPRK), calling it ?a grave challenge? that violates international norms, aggravates regional tensions and creates serious security issues for the world community.

3) a posição oficial europeia ("EU presidency statement on the carrying out of a nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea"): The Presidency of the European Union strongly condemns the test of a nuclear explosive device by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Carrying out the test was unacceptable. The EU works in close cooperation with the international community for a decisive international response to this provocative act.

Scientists Try to Determine if North Korea Set Off Nuclear Explosion: North Korea sets off an earthshaking explosion and claims it was nuclear. Was it? For scientists, that was not a quick and easy question to answer.
Like earthquakes, large explosions send out shockwaves that can be detected on seismographs. Big nuclear bombs make big waves, with clear signatures that make them fairly easy to detect, analyze and confirm that they were caused by splitting atoms. But smaller blasts as North Korea's appears to have been are trickier to break down. [...]
"People have different way of cross cutting the data and interpreting them," said Lassina Zerbo, director of the International Data Center at the [Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization - CTBTO], which is based in Vienna, Austria. [...]
The CTBTO's stations are more extensive than those used by most countries. They monitor seismic events but also underwater data, radioactive particles in the air and radiowaves.
"Within 72 hours we will have full data. Then all this will be available to member states," said Zerbo.
While the North Korean explosion was small, potentially complicating monitoring efforts, sensors in South Korea were likely close enough to categorize it as nuclear, if that is what is was, said Friedrich Steinhaeusler, professor of physics at Salzburg University.
A nuclear blast also gives off a clear signature a clear graph of peaks and curves that differentiates it from other kinds of shocks, he added.
"We'll have the confirmation soon," he said.

North Korean blast seems small for a nuke: It is easy to say that the blast was an explosion rather than an earthquake by looking at the seismic signal: an explosion has a much sharper start than a quake. But to identify the details of a nuclear explosion will take more delving. Scientists will pour over seismic data in the coming days. To get a complete picture, the geology of the rock will also need to be considered.

North Korea may be far from being able to mount atomic attack: North Korea may have the bomb. But the complexities of developing nuclear warheads from Pyongyang's claimed successful test explosion _ and the means to deliver them _ means the country may be years away from posing an atomic threat to the rest of the world. [...]
Ahead of Monday's explosion, former U.N. nuclear inspector David Albright, president of the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, speculated that the test bomb would have a yield three to four times weaker than the bombs that destroyed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II because of the North Koreans' lack of ability to produce a stronger weapon.
Indirectly confirming Albright's comments on Monday, both Russian and South Korean officials said seismic measurements showed the blast was far weaker than those dropped on the two Japanese cities.
Size matters as well. Rudimentary test bombs can be the size of small trucks, ruling them out as missile payloads. While smaller, even the bomb dropped from aircraft on Nagasaki weighed nearly 6 tons.
"They can deliver it, put it on a cargo ship, drop it from a cargo plane," said Gordon Chang, author of "Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes On the World." "The point is, can they shrink it to put it on a missile? I don't think they can."

Politicians must tackle Internet paradoxes: Google chief: Politicians must get their heads around the myriad paradoxes of the Internet if they are to stay ahead of the game, the head of Internet search giant Google insisted.
Eric Schmidt, the chairman and chief executive of the United States firm, said information was power and those who could grasp it as quickly as it was produced would be some of the greatest leaders of the future. [...]
Schmidt told delegates: "The average blog has one reader: the blogger".

Mediamorphosis: Every so often, the print media go into panic about the print media. [...]
With exceptions such as China and India, the (slow) decline of the newspaper business is a worldwide trend. The big mistake that newspapers in America, Europe and Latin America have made in response to the new environment is to treat this trend as a financial and a technological challenge rather than a cultural phenomenon. [...]
The newspaper industry's response over the past decade -- and Knight-Ridder is a good example, but not the only one -- has consisted mainly of two things: restructuring finances and providing online versions of print products. [...]
The cultural change taking place with regard to information amounts to a decentralization of power. [...]
People want more control over what they read, watch or hear. Some organizations have understood this. [...]
Folks have discovered that they can make for themselves the type of selection that the traditional newspaper has made for them since the 17th century. Readers realize they can participate in the selection process by creating their own information mix. For the moment, this means jumping from one online outlet to the other according to the various items the reader seeks.
In the old days, they used to call it choice and freedom. Today we call it murder. But nobody killed the newspaper. It's just that information, which used to flow from the top down, is now starting to flow from the bottom up.

At Last, The Last Content Types: These content types are, by and large, unique to the web, so as an example newspaper online sites don’t make it into here but citizen media online newspapers do, podcasts make it but TV programmes on the web don’t. To be here a site has to be offering content made possible by the web and where possible be unique to the web.

Courts are asked to crack down on bloggers, websites: In the past two years, more than 50 lawsuits stemming from postings on blogs and website message boards have been filed across the nation. The suits have spawned a debate over how the "blogosphere" and its revolutionary impact on speech and publishing might change libel law.
Legal analysts say the lawsuits are challenging a mind-set that has long surrounded blogging: that most bloggers essentially are "judgment-proof" because they — unlike traditional media such as newspapers, magazines and television outlets — often are ordinary citizens who don't have a lot of money. Recent lawsuits by Banks and others who say they have had their reputations harmed or their privacy violated have been aimed not just at cash awards but also at silencing their critics.
"Bloggers didn't think they could be subject to libel," says Eric Robinson, a Media Law Resource Center attorney. "You take what is on your mind, type it and post it."

À atenção dos críticos dos Estados Unidos:
Software Being Developed to Monitor Opinions of U.S.: A consortium of major universities, using Homeland Security Department money, is developing software that would let the government monitor negative opinions of the United States or its leaders in newspapers and other publications overseas.
Such a ?sentiment analysis? is intended to identify potential threats to the nation, security officials said.
Researchers at institutions including Cornell, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Utah intend to test the system on hundreds of articles published in 2001 and 2002 on topics like President Bush?s use of the term ?axis of evil,? the handling of detainees at Guantánamo Bay, the debate over global warming and the coup attempt against President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela. [...]
"It is just creepy and Orwellian," said Lucy Dalglish, a lawyer and former editor who is executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. [...]
?There has to be guidelines and restrictions on the use of this kind of technology by the government,? [associate professor of computer science at the University of Pittsburgh] Wiebe said. ?But it doesn?t mean it is not useful. It can just as easily help the government understand what is going on in places around the world.?

Web journals threaten peerreview system: Scientists frustrated by the iron grip that academic journals hold over their research can now pursue another path to fame by taking their research straight to the public online. [...]
Democratizing the peer-review process raises sticky questions. Not all studies are useful and flooding the Web with essentially unfiltered research could create a deluge of junk science. There's also the potential for online abuse as rogue researchers could unfairly ridicule a rival's work.
Supporters point out that rushing research to the public could accelerate scientific discovery, while online critiques may help detect mistakes or fraud more quickly.
The open peer review movement stems from dissatisfaction with the status quo, which gives reviewers great power and can cause long publication delays. In traditional peer review, an editor sends a manuscript to two or three experts - referees who are unpaid and not publicly named, yet they hold tremendous sway.
Careers can be at stake. In the cutthroat world of research, publishing establishes a pedigree, which can help scientists gain tenure at a university or obtain lucrative federal grants.
Researchers whose work appear in traditional journals are often more highly regarded.

IRS to churches: Watch what you preach: Hovering ominously above the debate are the dreaded IRS agents who have vowed to enforce the section of the tax code that prohibits all tax-exempt charitable organizations, including churches, from participating or intervening in any political campaign for or against any candidate.
But what constitutes ?intervening? ? short of saying vote for candidate X or support the Y party? IRS rules allow churches to speak out on political issues and permit voter registration and education efforts. But exactly when do those activities become ?partisan? in violation of the tax code?
